Chris Willock is likely to leave Benfica this summer, just a year on from joining the club from Arsenal last summer, according to reports in Portugal.
The Benfica first-team are currently in England, taking part in a training camp at St. George’s Park. Willock isn’t with them though, as he didn’t get the call up from club manager Rui Vitoria which has left him in complete shock.
According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Willock is surprised at being left out, as he believes he’s ready to make the jump to the first team. That’s part of the reason he left Arsenal in the first place, after all.
Now he feels ‘in the dark’ about whether he’ll ever get opportunities with the main team. He’s going to wait for Benfica to explain their plans to him, but right now A Bola think an exit is the most likely scenario.
You can understand why Willock might feel concerned with his current situation. If anything, he’s in an even worse position than last year, when he was with the first team at the Emirates Cup in pre-season.
Perhaps he just isn’t getting the numbers for goals and assists the club want, with three goals and two assists in 30 appearances from the wing for the B team last season. Hopefully he plays more regularly for a first-team in the coming campaign, whether that’s with Benfica or elsewhere.
