Arsenal had a bid rejected for Oguzhan Ozyakup in January, according to reports in Turkey.

Ozyakup appears set to leave Besiktas on a free transfer at the end of the season and Arsenal have been mentioned as one club that could look to take advantage of his contract situation.

It is believed that the midfielder wants a new challenge and the prospect of returning to a club where he was groomed may be too good to turn down.

As for Arsenal, they have watched their former academy product develop into a top player at Besiktas and wouldn’t mind bringing him back.

And Gunes via the Daily Cannon reports that Arsenal had already tried to resign Ozyakup but failed.

According to the report, the Gunners made a €7m bid for Ozyakup in January but Besiktas didn’t want anything less than €12m.

Arsenal reportedly balked at meeting the Turkish giants valuation and one can understand perfectly the reason for the club’s decision.

Arsenal has a 30% sell on clause in Ozyakup’s contract, meaning, meeting Besiktas demand would have effectively see the club spend more than €15m on the midfielder. Considering Ozyakup had just six months left in his contract at the time, that was just too much to spend on him.

While all these claims would sound logical to some ears, the paper soured this report by claiming Jack Wilshere wants to leave Arsenal and continue his football in Spain, so that was the reason Wenger was so keen on Ozyakup.

Wilshere’s recent comments suggests the opposite. The midfielder has always insisted he wants to stay beyond his current contract and recent multiple reports claiming he is close to extending his stay rubbishes Gunes claims.

Whether we are really interested in Ozyakup, only time will tell but if we are, it’s certainly not as a replacement for Wilshere.
