Former Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista wants to play for Spain in Euro 2020, despite his Brazilian background.
According to reports in Spain, Gabriel is currently in the process of obtaining a Spanish passport, with the intention of representing the country internationally.
The player is in good form, and the sense is that he would be in contention for a call-up if he does manage to get a passport, though he won’t be involved in the upcoming international break with the squad already announced.
Gabriel has previously made it into the Brazil squad for international friendlies and World Cup qualifiers, but he’s never actually made it onto the pitch for the side, even at youth level.
As a result, there’s no issue with him transferring his international allegiance if he gets a passport.
It was the same situation with Diego Costa in 2014, who had made his Brazil debut but hadn’t played a competitive match, only featuring in two friendlies.
As a result, he was free to switch to Spain, and Gabriel could be set to join him soon.
