According to stunning reports making the rounds in Germany, Arsenal transfer team are well on their way to completing their Borussia Dortmund tribute act, with new interest in Mario Gotze emerging.
Sky Sports write that Arsenal are one of three English teams interested in the German playmaker, along with Everton and West Ham.
Dortmund are reportedly keen to recoup the ‘vast majority’ of the £22m they paid Bayern Munich to bring the 26-year-old back to his former club in 2016.
Gotze has two years left on his Dortmund deal, and didn’t have the best of seasons in 2017/18. He dropped in and out of the team with a couple of injuries, and never really got a consistent run of starts when he did manage to stay fit. In total, he scored two goals and provided seven assists.
If Arsenal could get the German playing like he was before he left for Bayern in the first place, it would be a fantastic signing. With Jack Wilshere out of Arsenal, it wouldn’t be completely out of the question for Arsenal to go for another midfielder either.
On the other hand, it’d still be a fairly big money signing for a position that isn’t crucial for Arsenal to spend on. A goalkeeper, a second centre-back and a natural winger should all be higher priority signings. I wouldn’t read too much into this rumour just yet.
