Arsenal have expressed interest in signing Germany international Matthias Ginter from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer, reports say.

Unai Emery wants to bring at least three new players to the Emirates at the end of the season, with defensive reinforcements his priority.

The Gunners have shipped 36 goals in 25 Premier League fixtures this term, the most of any team in the top half of the table bar Everton and Bournemouth.

Shkodran Mustafi has failed to justify his £35million transfer fee after arriving from Valencia in 2016, while a number of Arsenal defenders have struggled with injuries this season.

Arsenal will attempt to sign a new centre back this summer and Sky Sports say scouts from the Emirates are keeping tabs on Monchengladbach star Ginter ahead of a possible move.

The 25-year-old has 23 appearances for Germany and has attracted interest from the Premier League before, emerging as a target for Tottenham in 2017.

It is claimed Spurs have now renewed their interest in Ginter, with the defender identified as a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld, who is expected to leave this summer for just £25m.

Despite Arsenal’s leaky defence, the club failed to bolster Emery’s defensive options during the January transfer window, with Denis Suarez the only arrival in north London.

Club legend Emmanuel Petit slammed the decision not to sign a defender, saying: ‘Defensively, Arsenal have not been good enough this season.

‘So I was surprised they did not try to sign defenders in January. But the problems they have will not be solved by signing a player or two.

‘Clearly, the defence is a problem. The better teams are getting through them far too easily, and when I hear Emery say he is happy with his defence and he does not need new players in these positions, I’m pretty sure he does not believe this.’

As Arsenal continue to scout a number of defenders, it has emerged that Emery is said to be ready to put Mustafi on the club’s transfer list ahead of the summer.

Emery, who arrived at Arsenal last summer, will reportedly be given just £45m to spend at the end of the season.

The Gunners dropped out of the top four at the weekend after losing to Manchester City and seeing rivals Chelsea and Manchester United both win.

Emery’s side, currently three points below fourth-placed Chelsea, face struggling Huddersfield Town this weekend.
