Shock as Mesut Ozil to Miss Out On Arsenal’s 25-man Premier League Squad

Arsenal News HQ brings you the latest Arsenal news, match analysis, transfer news, injury news, team news and rumours from trusted media outlets around the World.

Reporters in the English media are expecting Arsenal to leave Mesut Özil out of the Premier League squad, just like they did with the Europa League.

The Daily Mail report that they’re expecting Mesut Özil to miss out on Arsenal’s 25-man Premier League squad for the next few months. They write that the player has ‘no assurances’ he’ll feature in the 25.

Arsenal have 19 non-homegrown players over the age of 21, more than the maximum of 17. So two players will miss out, and Özil and Sokratis are obviously the prime candidates. Both already missed out on the Europa League list.

The one piece of good news to bring you is that William Saliba should feature in the Premier League squad, unlike with the Europa League. This is due to differing regulations in the two competitions.

In the Europa League, in order to feature on the B-list, you have to be under 21 and have been registered with your current club for an uninterrupted period of two years. Saliba doesn’t fulfil that second criterion, so he was ineligible for the B-list.

As a result, Saliba was only eligible for the Europa League A-list, and Arsenal didn’t have any spaces for a non-homegrown player on that list. Hence Saliba joined Sokratis and Özil missing out.

In the Premier League, you just have to be under 21. There are no other restrictions. So he can go on the under-21 list without taking up a spot on the main one, making him eligible for all league matches.
