Unai Emery has steered Arsenal to a perfect record in the Premier League in matches played directly after an appearance in the Europa League knockout stages.

The 1-0 win over Watford on Monday night was the fifth game Emery has successfully won directly after Arsenal played on Thursday night in Europe.

Arsenal are yet to drop points after their Europa League knockout games, but Chelsea have not been so lucky.

Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea have struggled in the league after their recent Europa League games and are yet to win any of the three matches played immediately after a Thursday night appearance in 2019.

Chelsea have drawn two and lost three of the games they have played in total directly after their Europa League appearances, having been dumped out of the FA Cup and lost the Carabao Cup final after each of their last-32 round games against Malmo.

The Blues’ form after the Europa League in 2019 has had a significant effect on their push to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Sarri’s side are level on 66 points with Arsenal, but sit fifth in the Premier League due to goal difference. Arsenal also have a game in hand over their local rivals, but the victory over Watford was the Gunners’ first away from home since Boxing Day.

While Chelsea have to travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United before the end of the season, Arsenal have three more away games this season.

Arsenal’s game in hand over Chelsea is an away trip to Wolves, who have a superb record against the Premier League top six this season.

The impressive statistic for Arsenal may prove crucial in the run-in with the Gunners and Chelsea on track to qualify for the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Arsenal are two goals to the good ahead of their second leg against Napoli on Thursday, while Chelsea have an away goal to bring to Stamford Bridge in their game against Slavia Prague.
