Liverpool legend Jamie Redknapp has backed Arsenal duo Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi to develop into a great centre back pairing for the club.
The duo have developed a wonderful understanding since Mustafi completed a move to the Emirates and they perform as though they have been playing together for a long time.
They put in a great performance against Chelsea on Saturday evening and Redknapp says he sees the two players developing a solid partnership in the future.
“Arsenal have won plenty of plaudits for their attacking play against Chelsea but I was so impressed with how sound they were defensive,” Redknapp wrote in his Mail column.
“Their centre backs have been too easily bullied in recent years by Didier Drogba and Diego Costa. On Saturday afternoon, Shkodran Mustafi wasn’t having any of it.
“He showed so much quality alongside Laurent Koscielny and for the first time in a long time it looks like Arsenal have found a great centre-back partnership.
“The pair are both quick and good in the air. They are strong in both boxes and will threaten from set pieces, too.
“Mustafi hasn’t found it easy adapting to the Premier League since his move from Valencia – Saturday was his first clean sheet in an Arsenal shirt -but after this display, his confidence should soar.”
Arsenal are used to be known for it’s defensive solidity in the past which was a key attribute in the club’s last title-winning squad in 2004. However, things have changed since then and the club have been criticized for its soft defensive performances. Arsenal fans are hoping Koscielny and Mustafi can help solidify the defense as the club attempts to launch a successful title challenge this season.
