Mesut Ozil trained alongside Mohamed Elneny during Arsenal’s defeat to West Ham after being dropped from the matchday squad by Unai Emery.
The midfielder hasn’t played for Arsenal since Boxing Day due to a knee injury but he was available for selection this weekend having fully trained in the days leading up to the game.
But Emery opted to omit Ozil from his squad once again and gave an abrupt response when asked about the 30-year-old’s absence shortly before Arsenal kicked off against West Ham on Saturday.
‘The players here are better for the match today,’ said Emery.
But in a video which was posted on Elneny’s Instagram account after Arsenal’s team news was announced, Ozil said in Arabic: ‘Don’t be sad, God is with us.’
Ozil, who is Arsenal’s top earner with his £350,000-a-week contract, will now be targeting a return for the Gunners’ clash against Chelsea next Saturday.
Emery, meanwhile, suffered another setback in his bid to secure a top-four finish as his side were beaten by West Ham at the London Stadium.
Declan Rice score his first goal for West Ham to secure victory for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, while Arsenal will be six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea if they beat Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
