Arsenal-linked Miguel Layun has signed for Villarreal CF, leaving FC Porto after agreeing a three-year deal with his new Spanish side.
Layun spent the second half of last season on loan with Sevilla, but they decided not to take up their option-to-buy at the end of the campaign. As a result of that fact and the full-back’s solid World Cup showing, the media linked him to a number of clubs, including Arsenal.
Villarreal have put all the rumours to rest now though, announcing that they’ve reached an agreement with Porto for a transfer. He’ll join up with the Yellow Submarine for his presentation to the fans in the coming days.
Layun’s biggest draw is his versatility. In general he plays right-back, but his ability to use both feet means he can also play on the left. Plus, his offensive capabilities mean he can play higher up the pitch on the wing when necessary.
The 30-year-old might’ve made a good squad player for Arsenal, but the club are pretty well stocked at full-back right now.
Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal have the position covered on one side, with youth player Tolaji Bola behind them. Then Stephan Lichtsteiner, Hector Bellerin, and academy prospect Jordi Osei-Tutu are competing for starts on the right. Villarreal was probably a better choice for Layun, in the end.
