Match Report: Arsenal 2 v 1 Liverpool – Ox-inspired Arsenal claim FA Cup win

By Bala

Arsenal avenged their risible performance at Anfield with a 2-1 defeat of Liverpool in a gripping FA cup tie and progressed to the quarter finals where they will be meeting the blue team of Merseyside- Everton. It is a welcome win for the Gunners at the end of a tough week.

Arsenal made seven changes to the side that drew 0-0 to Manutd, Yaya Sanogo was the surprise inclusion, Podolski and Ox both started and Jenkinson came in for Sagna. Flamini and Arteta were the double midfield pivot.

Liverpool made two changes from the side that pulverized us with Agger and Allen in for Toure and Henderson.

Liverpool came flying out of the blocks and should have atleast scored once in the opening quarter,Sturridge was the culprit on both occasions hitting the side netting once and the other effort brought a smart save from Fabianski.

Arsenal then controlled the midfield and Nacho Man was tripped by Flanagan near the Liverpool corner and was booked. Arteta took the free-kick and the ball after a clearance fell to Mesut Ozil ,who curled a ball into the box and Yaya Sanogo chested it brilliantly and hit a goalbound shot that struck Gerrard and fell kindly to Chamberlain who slotted it coolly into the net. Revenge well and truly on.

The first half then fizzled out with the game punctuated by fouls and cards were flashed. Yes Flamini got one,How could he not? The second half began in an almost identical fashion to the first. Suarez drew a good block from the Arsenal keeper. This was to be a key moment in the match as minutes later Ozil slid in a beautiful pass to Chamberlain who crossed it to Podolski and the German made no mistake by firing it home. He really is our best finisher.

The match was slipping from Liverpool and Arsenal could have had 3 where it not for the Liverpool keeper Jones who brilliantly denied Mesut Ozil. At the other end Suarez and Sturridge tested Fabianski with well taken shots. Around the hour mark Podolski felled Suarez inside the box and Liverpool were awarded a penalty. Gerrard converted it and the Scousers were back in it.

Liverpool were then given a free kick on the edge of the Arsenal box and Suarez hit the wall with his effort. Arsenal were lucky Chamberlain fouled Suarez inside the box and the referee waved away the penalty claims. Should have been a penalty.

Gerrard should have been sent off for a second bookable offence on Chamberlain but it was just a free kick. Podolski was substituted and on came Cazorla. The Spaniard should have scored but blew the chance with a miscued shot. Gibbs then came on to shore things at the back and Giroud was introduced in the place of the impressive Sanogo. Agger should have scored from a Gerrard free kick but he headed it just wide. That was it and the game ended.

Arsenal through to the last eight at the expense of Liverpool and how to vindicate oneself. It was by no means easy but Arsenal dug it out. The win would have done a world of good to our confidence going into the midweek European clash. Bring on Bayern. The treble is on.
