Player Ratings: Liverpool 5 v 1 Arsenal

One of the worst performances from Arsenal I’ve ever seen. It was worse than that 8:2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United.

We had played at Old Trafford without six or seven important players against the reigning champions and today we were without Walcott and Ramsey that would have played had they been available. Here are ratings from today’s game:

Wojciech Szczesny | 4.5: It’s not like he could have done much better but he conceded five goals.

Bacary Sagna | 4.0: The least responsible member of defence for our defeat today but he didn’t have to give a half-decent performance to accomplish that.

Per Mertesacker | 2.0: He didn’t have any help neither from the midfield nor from his partner Koscielny which – combined with his lack of pace – was a recipe for disaster. Couldn’t cope with pacey attackers like Sterling, Sturridge and Suarez.

Laurent Koscielny | 2.0: His positioning was terrible. Just like Mertesacker, Koscielny resembled himself from the worst period of his Arsenal career.

Nacho Monreal | 1.0: I like Nacho but he has been a liability in our defense this season. He can’t replace Gibbs properly and his presence was a bad omen again – just like against Manchester City. I thought he can’t do worse than he had done at Etihad but he made me change my mind.

Mikel Arteta | 1.5: I’m afraid that Arteta’s career at Arsenal can only go downwards. He was over-run today and offered no protection for our back four. He slotted a penalty home and came close to completing a brace but his excellent free-kick was saved by Mignolet. We need a defensive midfielder that can cope with top teams and it seems that neither Arteta nor Flamini are good enough for that.

Jack Wilshere | 5.0: One of rare players that wasn’t heart-less today but it still wasn’t a performance to remember from Jack.

Mesut Özil | 1.0: I’ve been on Özil’s side this season even though he has yet to justify his price tag but today’s performance was beyond terrible. Unfortunately, the German hasn’t put in a good shift in a big Premier League match this season and will have to raise his game against United.

Santi Cazorla | 4.0: Our “Player of the month” for January didn’t keep his form and was very quiet today.

Alex Oxlade Chamberlain | 5.5: He earned a penalty and looked lively in the second half. He was our best player today but it’s not like he had a stiff competition for that award.

Olivier Giroud | 3.0: Liverpool have Suarez and Sturridge. We have Giroud. I like our big Frenchman but he is not good enough to bail us out when our defending is poor. That’s why we haven’t won a single game in which we conceded two goals this season. Of course, our midfield was terrible and wingers were ineffective but Giroud didn’t help our cause either.

Tomas Rosicky | N/A: He had a half an hour but the game was effectively finished. He should be the first name on the squad sheet as he gives us energy and determination that we didn’t have today.

Keiran Gibbs | N/A: He should be in the starting eleven. I didn’t rate him either but it should be said that he had a poor attempt of a clearance that was nearly punished.

Lukas Podolski | N/A: I will be very surprised if Podolski stays at Arsenal next season.
