Manchester United are reportedly confident they can sign Lille star Nicolas Pepe ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool.
Pepe has been one of the standout attacking players in France this term, notching up 20 goals and 11 assists in Ligue 1, and Europe’s elite clubs are preparing to do battle for the 23-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Ivorian’s agent has confirmed that he’s in talks with several clubs over a potential big-money move with Bayern Munich thought to be at the front of the queue for his signature.
However, according to The Daily Mirror, United have registered a strong interest in Pepe and believe they can lure the sought-after forward to Old Trafford with a £45 million bid.
The Red Devils are optimistic they can still attract the likes of Pepe this summer despite failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
United have been keeping close tabs on Pepe for several months with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preparing to overhaul his squad after a dismal end to the 2018/19 season.
Asked about his future following Lille’s win over Bordeaux, Pepe replied: ‘We don’t talk about it, the season is not over yet.
‘Once it is finished we will be able to talk about it, but now no.’
Though Pepe’s agent has made no secret of the growing interest in Pepe, he has refused to name which clubs are favourites for his signature.
‘We are in discussions with clubs. No decision has been taken,’ Samir Khiat told RTL at the end of last month.
‘Today, there are no favourites, be it Bayern Munich or another club. Nicolas will not go just anywhere.
‘We have not decided on which league.’
