Michael Dawson quipped that his nephew Joey is signing for the wrong side in North London, after rumours the youngster could be joining Arsenal.

The Sun reported this week that Arsenal are looking to sign the 16-year-old from Scunthorpe, who became the youngest first-team player in their history in August.

Joey Dawson’s uncle is Michael Dawson, who spent nine years with Tottenham Hotspur making over 300 appearances for Arsenal’s North London rivals. As a result, he suggested his nephew would be better off avoiding the Gunners for his old club.

“When I saw that rumour the other day I thought: ‘He’s signing for the wrong side in north London’,” Dawson said.

“He’s good on the ball and as he’s young, if he keeps his head down, keeps working, you never know where that will lead.”

Joey Dawson’s first-team debut from the bench in the League Cup in August is his only appearance on the pitch so far, though he has made Scunthorpe’s senior squad on six occasions this season.

The midfielder may have a decision to make in a few months, but for now, he should listen to the second part of his uncle’s advice and keep his head down.

The more time he spends impressing around the Scunthorpe first team, the more likely a Premier League club comes in with an offer – whichever club that is.
