Arsenal are in pole position to sign Ajax full-back Nicolas Tagliafico, according to reports in Spain.

Nacho Monreal is set to leave Arsenal when his contract expires in the summer, with Sead Kolasinac establishing himself as Unai Emery’s first-choice left-back in the Premier League this season.

The Gunners are scouring the market for Monreal’s long-term replacement after accepting the Spaniard’s imminent departure and Tagliafico has been identified as a potential solution at full-back.

Marca claims that Tagliafico is attracting interest from a number of top European clubs, but Arsenal boss Emery is ‘best positioned’ to land the 26-year-old defender.

The report suggests that Ajax are demanding a fee of around €20million (£17m) for the sought-after Argentina international.

It’s understood both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are also plotting moves for Tagliafico ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Earlier this week, Tagliafico brushed off speculation that he could be set for a move to Atleti in the summer transfer window.

‘If [Diego] Simeone is interested in me and really loves me then it means that I’m doing well,’ he said.

‘But now the important thing is to think about the Ajax.’

Arsenal could be set for a major squad overhaul, with Monchi reportedly set for a reunion with Emery in north London after stepping down from his post as Roma’s sporting director.

Emery trusts Monchi from their time together at Sevilla where the latter oversaw the construction of a squad that won three successive Europa League titles.
