Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehman has revealed he was shocked when Arsenal signed Shkodran Mustafi, according to a report in Football365.com.
Mustafi completed a move from Valencia to Arsenal towards the end of the transfer window. It wasn’t an easy deal as Wenger had to part with a whopping £35m to bring the defender to the Emirates and Lehman has revealed he was surprised sanctioned such an expensive deal.
“It’s unlike Arsenal to sign a defender for almost €40m – I’m surprised,” Lehman said.
“I think he’s probably the most successful manager in making money for the club.
“He’s always taken part in the Champions League, buying cheap and selling expensive.
“He was a major player in setting up the new stadium and at the same time always playing Champions League football.”
Just like Lehman, many Arsenal fans were surprised to see Wenger splash big on the defender but the boss had no choice as Mustafi was needed to help provide cover for an injury-ravaged defense.
The £35m spent on Mustafi makes him one of the most expensive players in the squad but should he help shore up a defense that was sometimes questioned last season, he would represent good value for money.
The defender is in line to make his debut against Southampton this weekend.
