Major footballing authorities have voiced their disapproval at the plans for a European Super League.
Some documents recently leaked to the media claim that a number of elite clubs across Europe’s top five leagues plan to leave their domestic competition to play in a new league as early as 2021.
Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, AC Milan, AC Milan among other European teams are said to be among 16 clubs who plan to organize this new league.
The plan has now received strong condemnation from the Association of European Professional Football Leagues and FIFA.
The President of the world football governing body Gianni Infantino has threatened to ban players who take part in the proposed Super League for life.
The Association of European Leagues released a statement on their website condemning the plan.
“The European Leagues note the ongoing rumours and speculations around the possible creation of a European Super League by the big European professional clubs.
“The Association of European Leagues has consistently voiced its strong opposition to the creation of any “closed and franchised style” Super League.
“The Leagues supports the European sports model based on a pyramid structure where the mechanisms of promotion and relegation and the sporting merits of clubs are at the core of any competition.
“Domestic football is at the heart of the game throughout Europe for all football stakeholders: players, clubs, leagues, national associations and, more importantly, fans. Proposals for a closed Super League will have serious and lasting implications for the long term sustainability of professional football in Europe.
“Within this context, the European Leagues fully supports UEFA in the management and organization of European Club Competitions and shares with UEFA the common principle of protecting and enhancing competitive balance in European football.“
Since the news broke out Arsenal have reaffirmed their commitment to the Premier League and Bayern Munich have also stated their commitment to the Bundesliga.
