Arsenal manager Unai Emery has urged the club transfer chiefs to launch a bid to sign Torino center back Nicolas Nkoulou this month, according to The Sun.
The Gunners have continued with their woeful form at the back this season with series of terrible defensive performances seeing them concede 32 goals in just 22 Premier League games so far and managing only 3 clean sheets.
To top their troubles, they’ve been facing fitness issues at the back this with Rob Holding who was a shining light in the defence now out for the season, Nacho Monreal has been battling a recurrent hamstring injury, Laurent Koscielny has not looked his usual self since returning to fitness recently after a very long layoff.
Skhodran Mustafi and Sokratis have proved to be a disastrous partnership this season, most notably in the 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool at the end of last year. And the need for a new center back has thus been further highlighted.
Nkoulou completed a move to Torino from Lyon for just £3.15 million last summer after a successful loan spell at the Italian side the season before.
He has been outstanding at the back this season for the Turin club as they currently boast the 5th best defensive record in the league conceding 19 goals in 19 games so far which is better than Roma, AC Milan and Lazio.
Emery is keen to strengthen his backline and has urged the board to move for Nkoulou according to reports from Italy. They also claim Torino will struggle to reject an offer in the region of £12 million if Arsenal were to table such bid.
The Gunners currently do not have funds to spend this January as admitted by Emery, but a loan deal with an option to buy in the summer could be a possibility.
