Cristian Pavon has agreed a new four-year deal to remain with Boca Juniors, increasing his release clause with the club to €50m (£44.2m), according to the club’s president.
PlanetaBocaJuniors write that Pavon has given Juniors fans the news they were hoping for, signing a contract extension and agreeing to remain with the club until at least December.
He reportedly wants to stay to play the Copa Libertadores, even if he does plan to leave for Europe in the end.
Boca Juniors club president Daniel Angelici confirmed the news, in quotes reported on the Argentinian outlet’s website.
“Pavón stays, he’s signed for four more years,” he revealed.
“The clause is 50 million euros, which was what we wanted to be calm. We wanted to sell him when we know that it’s the right moment. So, for now, we want Boca fans to enjoy it (Pavon’s presence in the team).
“We talked with his representative, with him and his family and we reached an agreement. He knows that his future in the short and medium term is in Europe, but now he’s happy and makes the Boca fans happy. They love him so much.”
The media had previously linked Arsenal with a move for the player, both in the January window and this summer. Those links only grew strong as Pavon performed more and more impressively, eventually earning a call up with Argentina for the World Cup, despite his age.
However, not only does Pavon now have a new deal, and a strong desire to remain at his current club for the time being, but Arsenal also face competition from Barcelona. Marca write that the La Liga side are ready to offer a lucrative contract to the player.
For now, at least, this move seems like a near impossibility. We’ll have to wait and see if the rumours return in the January window.
