Confirmed: Emery facing huge wage restriction battle, could be forced to sell Ramsey to solve transfer embargo

Arsenal News HQ brings you the latest Arsenal news, match analysis, transfer news, injury news, team news and rumours from trusted media outlets around the World.

Arsenal will have to choose between giving Aaron Ramsey a new contract and making further signings in January, due to wage restrictions, according to reports.

The Telegraph write that Unai Emery is already facing wage restrictions, after all the deals Arsenal have done this year. The club brought in five summer signings, but also added Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in major January deals.

As well as that, there were a large number of contract extenders this year. Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Granit Xhaka, Mohamed Elneny, Rob Holding, Calum Chambers (even if he has now gone on loan) and of course Mesut Özil, are all on higher salaries than last year.

The result is that there’s little room in the wage budget for anything more. Even if Arsenal manage to offload fringe players now, agreeing a new contract with Ramsey would put them back at square one.

The good news is that things should change next year. The Telegraph report that Arsenal’s new Emirates deal and sleeve sponsor will come into effect next summer, bringing in an extra £20m-a-year.

The club also hope to bring in another extra £20m after making the change in kit manufacturer to Adidas, as the current £30m-a-year deal rises to £50m.

Unfortunately that means a bit of a wait for new additions though, unless Ramsey does end up leaving in January. If that happens, the picture changes again. We’ll have to wait and see how negotiations pan out.
