Confirmed by Sky Sports: Arsenal double defender deal revealed

Arsenal News HQ brings you the latest Arsenal news, match analysis, transfer news, injury news, team news and rumours from trusted media outlets around the World.

Sky Sports Spanish football expert Guillem Ballague has revealed that Arsene Wenger tried to sign two defenders in the January transfer window.

It wasn’t a secret that Arsene Wenger wanted to strengthen his back line in the winter and had made signing a centre back a priority.

However, the manager was unsuccessful in his attempt to sign a proven defender because of the unavailability of options.

Jonny Evans was one player the club was constantly linked with throughout the transfer window but failed to get him.

West Brom wanted around £25m for the 30 year old but the Gunners were only willing to pay around £12m, which meant a deal couldn’t be struck.

Ballague has now revealed that it wasn’t only Evans Arsenal tried to sign.

In a video in his twitter account, the journalist was discussing Arsenal’s transfer dealings in January and stated Wenger wanted a centre back. He added that Wenger tried to sign Evans and another unnamed centre back.

The Gunners were linked with Manolas and David Luiz during the window, and it is possible that Ballague was referring to either of them.

Wenger had already stated his only regret was the failure to strengthen his backline in January and that shows how willing he was ready to spend on that position.

Arsenal have failed to keep a clean sheet since mid-December and could have been boosted by reinforcements. Anyway, our current defenders should be able to put in a decent shift until the summer.
