West Ham United are interested in bringing former Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom back to London, according to David Ornstein.

Reporting for The Athletic, David Ornstein claims West Ham are in the market for a striker in January and they’ve made contact with PAOK Salonika over a move for Arsenal academy striker Chuba Akpom.

The Hammers also tried to sign Akpom in the summer, but the deal fell through over the 24-year-old’s desire to play in the Champions League. Unfortunately, PAOK drew Ajax in qualifying and didn’t manage to make it into the competition.

Akpom wants to return to England now, after falling out of favour with PAOK, though he’s also drawing interest from Reims in France and FC Koln in Germany.

Akpom started the campaign well, scoring against Ajax in that Champions League qualifier and netting in two of PAOK’s first three league games. Since then, however, he’s only had one start in nine matches.

PAOK are currently level on points with Olympiakos at the top of the table, just four goals behind on goal difference. Domestic trophies are unlikely to keep Akpom around though.

The Englishman already won the league unbeaten and scored the winner in the Greek cup final last season. What more is there for him with PAOK if he’s not a regular starter?

It would be great to see the former Gunner playing regularly and scoring goals again, wherever that may be after January.
