Sokratis Papastathopoulos isn’t at all close to a move to Fenerbahce, with the genuine interest coming from Italy and Spain, according to a report.

Chris Wheatley writes that despite some recent reports, a Sokratis move to Fenerbahce was ‘never on’ as the club never even made an approach to sign the Arsenal defender.

Wheatley adds that there’s genuine interest from Real Betis and Genoa, plus another few teams in Spain and Italy.

Goal claimed earlier this week that the 32-year-old defender is keen to move to Spain. Arsenal are willing to let him go without a transfer fee, but the move hinges on Betis selling players first. They’re currently in a tight spot with regards to FFP.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano reports that Genoa are no longer confident of signing Sokratis. They’re looking at RB Salzburg’s Jerome Onguene instead, seemingly sensing Sokratis’ desire to play elsewhere.

Wheatley reported earlier this week that Sokratis has offers from several European teams for a January transfer, and he’ll make a decision on his future in the coming days.
