Club set to accept £10m bid for Arsenal target, deal to be completed next week

Arsenal News HQ brings you the latest Arsenal news, match analysis, transfer news, injury news, team news and rumours from trusted media outlets around the world.

Arsenal are set to miss out on RB Sarlzburg defender Dayot Upamecano.

In December, we covered a report that claimed the Gunners are monitoring Upamecano’s development at Salzburg and it was suggested that Wenger was weighing up whether to make a summer bid the youngster after being impressed by his performances.

But according to the Daily Express, the Gunners are set to miss out on the 18 year old defender.

The report claims German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig who have a special relationship with Salzburg has emerged as the front runners to sign the defender.

Leipzig are expected to submit a £10m bid which will be accepted by the player’s club. The deal could be completed before the end of the winter transfer window, in turn dashing any hope of Arsenal signing the player in the summer.

Upamecano is a versatile defender who can play as a left back as well as a centre defender and it is his versatility that caught Wenger’s attention.

It is unlikely that Leipzig interest will now force Wenger to bid for the defender this month. Arsenal may have to cool its interest in the defender due to the high level of competition for places in both positions where he is comfortable.

Manchester United and Barcelona were also linked with the defender but will lose out to Leipzig just like Arsenal.

That’s one target gone.
