Danny Welbeck seems set to be a long-term absentee for Arsenal after the England striker suffered what looked like a serious-looking injury to his ankle in Thursday’s 0-0 draw with Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium.
Further news is awaited from the club on Friday/Saturday, as is the case with Nacho Monreal (hamstring) and Stephan Lichtsteiner (muscle).
Monreal had been training away from the squad and wasn’t considered for the Europa League tie, while Lichtsteiner picked up his injury in that goalless draw with Sporting and was forced off on 74 minutes.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang played only an hour in midweek, while Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette were rested entirely and the attacking trio will likely come back into the starting XI for the visit of Wolves on Sunday.
Who joins them is open to debate as Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan both played 90 minutes against their Portuguese opponents, with perhaps Iwobi the slight favourite for the right-wing slot after coming off the bench against Liverpool last weekend and setting up Lacazette’s equaliser.
Matteo Guendouzi returns from suspension to offer Unai Emery an alternative option in midfield, though Mohamed Elneny (thigh) remains sidelined.
Sokratis has recovered from an ankle knock, meanwhile, but Laurent Koscielny is still working his way back to fitness after his re-integration into first-team training.
