As the season draws to a close, Arsenal News HQ takes a look at top two of the five candidates for Arsenal player of the season:
2. Per Mertesacker
Slow, Lanky, Weak, these were the commonly thrown disgusting remarks at Mertesacker when he first arrived at Arsenal. After an injury curtailed first season, he slowly exerted his presence in the team and is now one of the first names on the team sheet. His rise is nothing short of meteoric and he has been an inspiration both on and off the field.
His rollicking of Ozil at Etihad and his get well soon message to Walcott springs to mind. And he has scored two against Spurs and equalised for us at Wembley.
“Mertesacker is getting better every game. Yes, he has said to me it is [more] quick here, relentless. He adapts quite well, he is getting more aggressive. I like him personally. I think he is a very intelligent player. Trust the Germans, they can fight.” Wenger on Mertesacker when he arrived. A fitting tribute to the man and the man who trusted him.
1. Aaron Ramsey
Overwhelming favorite for the player of the year. I am running out of adjectives for him and is there a better box to box player out there in the league? (Toure is the best central midfielder but for me he doesn’t track back as diligently as Ramsey)I believe his confidence soared once he was given the contract extension last January. That was his shot in the arm, his performance improved from then on but this season he became celestial with his goals.
I know this has been done to death but his injury derailed Arsenal. His drive and energy was sorely missed and I seriously regret our draws with Swansea & City, were he present I don’t think we would have dropped those four points. And his miss was even more accentuated when he returned.
In short Arsenal missed Aaron Ramsey.
