Arsenal have expressed an interest in signing Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff on a free transfer this summer, according to reports.

TEAMtalk report that Matty Longstaff is considering leaving Newcastle this summer, and Arsenal are showing an interest.

Longstaff turned 20 on Saturday, and he’s up to 12 senior appearances for the season. The Newcastle academy graduate only has a contract until the end of the season, though. His club are struggling to convince him to agree new terms.

As a result, a number of foreign clubs are in contact with him. Given Longstaff is in the final six months of his deal, he’s free to sign a pre-contract abroad. Borussia Dortmund, Ajax, Club Brugge, Inter Milan and Atalanta all made approaches to him.

From England, Arsenal, Everton and West Ham are expressing their interest too.

Rather bizarrely, Longstaff has only made seven Premier League appearances in his career but scored in two separate matches against Manchester United. First on his debut at St. James’ Park, then later in the season at Old Trafford.

Funnily enough, those were the only two goals Newcastle scored against Manchester United this season. The first led to a 1-0 win, the second a 4-1 defeat.
