Karl Robinson has left Charlton Athletic by mutual consent just as Arsenal loanee Stephy Mavididi finally returns to fitness, in another stroke of bad luck for the youngster.
Charlton announced the joint decision on their website on Thursday, adding that Lee Bowyer will take over as Caretaker Manager for the time being.
The club are ninth in League One and struggling to make the play-offs, after just one win in eight games. Overall, it probably made sense to let him go.
If there’s anyone who might be disappointed with the departure though, it’s Mavididi.
Mavididi’s timeline of misfortune
Robinson initially signed the Arsenal youngster on loan in January 2017. The striker made an exciting start, but picked up an injury keeping him out until the end of the season.
The Charlton boss admitted he wanted to sign the 19-year-old again in the summer, but Championship Preston North End ended up securing his signature. After just three starts in half a season, Mavididi returned to Arsenal in January.
Still keen on the youngster, Robinson signed him up again, and gave him four starts in just a few weeks. The England u20 international scored two goals and assisted one in those first matches. Once again though, a hamstring injury interrupted his progress.
Now, days after his return to training, the manager who signed him is leaving the club.
Hopefully, Lee Bowyer will see the potential of Mavididi and give him a chance before the end of the season. It’s always a risk when the manager of your loan club changes though.
Cohen Bramall has only made two league starts since Harry Redknapp left Birmingham City in September. With any luck, things will be different for Mavididi, but we’ll have to wait and see.
