Arsenal have been ‘constantly’ monitoring PSV’s Steven Bergwijn this season as they try to find that elusive winger.

21-year-old Steven Bergwijn has been mostly linked with a move to Inter Milan when the transfer window opens in the summer but now reports from Italy claim that Arsenal are monitoring the player ‘constantly’.

Under contract until 2022 after signing a new deal last summer, Bergwijn has scored 12 goals, with 12 assists, in 28 Eredivisie games this season.

This isn’t the first time Arsenal have been linked with a move for him, either. Last summer, before he signed his contract extension with PSV Eindhoven, De Telegraaf reported that there was ‘massive interest’ in the player from the three clubs, who have ‘closely followed’ him in recent months. Arsenal were one of them along with Liverpool and Tottenham.

PSV reportedly wanted between €15m and €20m for Bergwijn’s signing back then after rejecting a €12m bid from Torino in the summer of 2017.

Speaking to FC Inter News recently, his agent said, “The next step is always the most important. The club that admires him the most and gives him the right prominence for his development will be able to help Steven with his choice.”

Given Arsenal’s limited budget, the club can’t really afford to splash big money a number of areas in the team, especially when there are so many problems at the back to address.

Bergwijn could, therefore, provide a slightly cheaper alternative to potentially fill the gap in the squad.
