Arsenal are planning to open talks with Atletico Madrid over the transfer of Javier Manquillo in the coming weeks, according to reports in Spanish Paper El Mundo Deportivo.
The 19 year old right back has been one of a number of Atletico players to impress this season and the youngster has reportedly caught the eye of Arsene Wenger.
The French manager has been trying to tie veteran right-back Bacary Sagna down to a new deal at the Emirates, but has so far failed to convince him to commit his future to the Gunners.
The report states that Manquillo has been shortlisted by the Gunners as a replacement and Wenger is preparing to contact officials at the Vicente Calderon in the coming weeks regarding a potential move.
Arsene Wenger recently stated his confidence of agreeing a deal with the player but with Sagna free to negotiate with other clubs, the Gunners have been forced to scan the globe for alternatives. The latest reports are indicating that Sagna could be on his way out of north London following a successful seven year spell at the club.
Manquillo is considered a terrific prospect in Spain having been capped seven times at under-20 level as well as featuring for Atletico in the Champions League.
The right back situation is one that clearly need some consideration right now with Sagna’s future in doubt. Carl Jenkinson has been fairly reliable back up to the Frenchman but it remains to be seen if the Arsenal boss sees him as the long-term replacement.
It would be preferred if we could extend 30-year-old’s contract as he has been in great form this season and also been a loyal servant to the club during the tough times. It’s the right time to repay his loyalty with a lucrative contract, however whether it should be for two or three year is up for debate.
