With all the injuries at the moment, our team almost picks itself. However, there is still a few selection headaches for Wenger as we enter the difficult February/ March period. The first of many tough games is against Liverpool, and against such a high profile team we need to be fielding a strong starting 11 and bench. One of the selection dilemmas is who starts in the middle of the park, Ox or Wilshere?
The Ox recently put in a top class performance, earning man of the match and showing signs of his brilliant best. He showed skill, strength, composure and technique to score two wonderfully worked goals. He looks like he has recovered from his injury and is nearly at full fitness. He always seems to step up his game against bigger teams.
Wilshere also showed all the attributes that the Ox has in the game before he gained his injury. He is also more experienced and whenever a player of Gerrards class is the opposition you will need a player like Wilshere to make short, quick runs and passes to break down the opposition and create chances.
The only thing Wilshere possesses that the Ox doesn’t is accurate short passing. Apart from this they are very similar. Some of you may be thinking ‘why not play both?’. The simple answer us they are both attack minded players and while they can both play on the wing aswell, they are more effective in the centre. For the above reasons, I would start with the partnership of the Ox and Arteta, and if needed bring Wilshere on later in the game and move the Ox onto the wing.
My preferred starting midfield vs Liverpool:
Cazorla Özil Gnabry
