Arsene Wenger has revealed his regret at not selling Alexis Sanchez earlier.
The Chile international joined Manchester United in January but was the subject of a £60m bid from Manchester City six months before his move.
However, Wenger blocked the big money move to City after failing to secure a replacement.
And the boss has now revealed he should have sold Sanchez then. Following the failed summer move, the Chilean was in the poorest form I had ever seen him in an Arsenal shirt and there were questions about his commitment but Wenger who never questioned the player’s commitment says he should have been sold earlier.
While speaking to BT Sport , the Wenger said: “Of course it is a new start for us because of the uncertainty of the transfer period is over, because we have new players, and because we have to show that we have done well in the transfer market, that we have made the right decisions.
“There was a lot of uncertainly around the team, with the Sanchez case, the Ozil case, and in hindsight maybe we should have cut that early. For [Sanchez] it was very difficult because as soon as he had a game and was average he was questioned every time: ‘Is he committed, is he not committed?’ I never questioned his commitment but it was a difficult situation.”
A summer exit would have afforded Arsenal enough time to replace the Chilean but Wenger’s refusal to sell didn’t help matters.
Following Sanchez’s departure in January, Arsenal brought in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to bolster our attacking options.
The Gabonese international has started well at Arsenal, netting on his debut. Time will tell if he can make up for the quality lost in Sanchez or not.
