The 23 year old has firmly established himself as the Gunners’ number-one between the posts and notched up his 100th appearance for the north Londoners this month.
The Gunners captain believes that the Poland international is getting better and better amid competition from compatriot Lukasz Fabianski.
“As somebody who has played in front of him for many of those [100 appearances], I am in a good position to say that his development has been excellent,” the captain told Arsenal’s official website.
“He had a short period out of the team last season, but came back really strongly and is playing very well. We aren’t conceding many goals, and that always gives a keeper plenty of confidence. Clean sheets are so important to them, and you can tell how much it means to them after a game when they have kept one.
“We are fortunate to have Lukasz Fabianski, who is an outstanding professional, pushing Wojciech so hard – which makes his appearance record even more impressive.
“This season, Wojciech has looked very solid and made very few errors, while coming up with some important saves at times when he has otherwise had little to do. His stop from Steve Sidwell against Fulham was a good example. He is getting better and better.”
Szczesny found himself out of the team at the end of last season after a run of indifferent form in the Gunners goal. But the young stopper has looked sensational so far during this campaign and could be key to the club’s hopes of winning the Premier League title. He has the ability to become the club’s long term number one if he continues to improve at the current rate.
