Arsenal are interested in a shock move for Toby Alderwelreld from arch-rivals Tottenham as the center back’s contract situation continues to linger, according to the Daily Star.
Alderwelreld who has been arguably Spurs best defender since he joined from Southampton, currently has a contract with Spurs that expires next summer and there has been no agreement reached on a new deal yet.
The club have the option of extending the contract by a further twelve months, but run the risk of losing him for just £20 million at the end of next season.
This situation has led to speculations that he would be allowed to leave this summer, and the likes of Arsenal, Paris Saint Germain, Chelsea Manchester City and Manchester United are now monitoring the situation with a bidding war set to occur.
The Belgian international seems to be interested in leaving the club with Mauricio Pochettino leaving him out of the side of late.
Arsenal have the odds well against them in this battle though, as Daniel Levy is unlikely to agree to sell to his arch rivals, and the Gunners failure to qualify for the Champions league makes their chances of wooing 29-year-old even slimmer.
Should the Gunners somehow manage to pull this one off, it’ll be reminiscent to the deal that saw Sol Campbell leave Tottenham for Arsenal in 2001.
