Arsene Wenger has revealed how difficult it was to convince David Ospina to stay at the club.
Ospina was heavily linked with a move away from the Emirates at the end of last season but in recent weeks, it emerged that he will be staying at the club until next summer at least.
Many began to wonder what must have caused the drastic change in the player’s future and what Wenger must have promised him to have made him changed his mind.
The boss has now revealed all he had to do to convince the Colombian shot stopper to stick around and trust me it wasn’t an easy job.
Speaking in a recent interview, Wenger admitted it wasn’t easy to convince Ospina to stay and also hinted at the promise of more game time and a fairer chance to compete with Cech for the No 1 spot.
“It was not easy to convince Ospina to stay, but he will play games and fight with Petr Cech to start,” Wenger said, reports the Daily Cannon.
“And anyway, we play other competitions. He wants to play in a World Cup year.”
Instead Emiliano Martinez was the one who left the club on loan to Getafe for the rest of the season.
It was the Argentine who was expected to remain as back up to Cech but he had to play elsewhere after Wenger mamaged to convince Ospina to stay.
I think it’s a win-win situation for Arsenal, we will still have two world class goalkeepers in the squad this season while Martinez goes out to continue his development, with the hope of returning to the club ready to succeed Cech as No. 1
