Oguzhan Ozyakup wants to return to the Premier League this summer, rather than moving to one of Besiktas’ rivals in Turkey, according to media in the country.
Ozyakup currently still has a contract with Besiktas, but it expires this summer, allowing him to move wherever he wants on a free transfer.
There were rumours that second-placed Fenerbahce wanted to sign him, but Serdar Saridag of Turkish outlet Milliyet claims the player prefers to go back to England with Arsenal having first option to buy.
“Ozyakup is getting attention from Fenerbahce, that’s true,” Saridag admitted.
“But he’s unlikely to play for them due to his respect for Besiktas. Instead, I can confirm that he favours a move to Premier League.”
Earlier this year, the media touted Ozyakup as a Jack Wilshere replacement. The Arsenal midfielder seems a little closer to signing a new deal now than he was then, but it’s still probable the club will need some reinforcements in the middle this summer. If so, the 25-year-old would make a decent option.
Ozyakup already knows the club from his first spell in North London, between 2008 and 2012. He only made two appearances for the first team, but got one of the quickest assists ever seen on his senior debut, setting up Yossi Benayoun after just one minute.
Arsenal reportedly had a €7m bid for the player turned down in January, as Besiktas wanted €12m. The Gunners also had a 30% sell on clause if Besiktas decided to sell elsewhere.
Perhaps now they’ll decide to give him the move he wants back to the Premier League instead.
