Arsene Wenger has denied reports that Arsenal are close to signing Jonny Evans.

Arsenal have been linked with Evans since last summer but the reports were heightened in recent weeks.

Reports last week claimed Arsenal were on the brink of a £25m deal for Evans, but Wenger has poured cold water on those reports.

When asked after the defeat against Nottingham Forest how close we are to signing Evans, Wenger said the club isn’t close to signing anyone.

 ‘No,” he said.

“I can’t give you any news on any transfer because we are not close to signing anyone.

‘We signed a Greek boy, who looks quite good in training. But apart from that we are not on anything.’

Arsenal were heavily linked an established defender before the start of the transfer window but the club has only managed to sign Mavropanos.

The 20 year old isn’t expected to feature for Arsenal first team anytime soon and will be sent out on loan once the right club is found.

Therefore, the club would still have space in its squad for a new centre back. David Luiz, Daniel Rugani and Jonny Evans are all believed to be on Wenger’s shortlist.
