“He’s not the same player this season” – Arsenal star blasts Koscielny

Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit is concerned for Laurent Koscielny’s World Cup chances.

Speaking on SFR Sport, Petit expressed concern for the France international following his poor performances this season. The centre-back has been carrying an Achilles problem for over a year now, for which he receives daily treatment, but this term he really seems to be struggling.

“He’s in danger (of not featuring) because he’s not the same player this season, much like the team that’s been in decline for years now, but I can’t see his competitive spirit, his leadership,” said Petit.

“He was always the first one to shout, make big tackles. Is he just dismayed at what’s going on with the team for some time? Probably. I think he’s also disappointed by some of the signings, and maybe he’s feeling he’s regressing, hence him saying this will be his last tournament with France.”

The 32-year-old announced back in November last year that he would retire from international football after the World Cup in Russia. But, as Petit says, it might be a tournament to forget for the star.

Kos doesn’t look like the same player and while a lot of this is probably down to his Achilles – it can’t be easy playing in pain – the whole squad has been off the pace.

Kos used to be one of Arsenal’s most reliable players – there’s a reason he was given the captain’s armband – but he’s looking more and more like a shadow of his former self.

I’m sure Didier Deschamps will call him up. Kos already has 50 caps since his first call-up in 2011 and the France boss knows this will be his last international tournament.

However, whether he actually plays or not is a different story. Plus, it doesn’t change the fact that one of Arsenal’s most respected men is no longer deemed able to perform on the big stage.
