Arsenal have been handed a major boost in its pursuit of Thomas Lemar, according to recent reports.
Liverpool Echo via the Express are claiming Liverpool who were one of Arsenal’s main rival for Lemar’s signature last summer has pulled out of the race to sign the 22 year old.
It was widely expected that both clubs would go head to head for the forward’s signature next summer but it’s now being reported that Jurgen Klopp’s men won’t make a move for the winger again.
Liverpool Echo has revealed that the Reds held extensive talks with Monaco over the winger last summer but nothing concrete materialised.
However, the report claims they withdrew their interest once Arsenal joined the race and tabled a big money offer, thereby inflating the winger’s value.
Arsenal tabled a £90m bid for Lemar on deadline day of the summer transfer window but ran out of time to complete the move.
The Reds were then quoted same figure in January as Klopp tried to find a replacement for Coutinho but he would rather spend such money in strengthening other positions in his squad.
There’s no denying that Arsenal’s offer inflated Lemar’s value but we were the first to register a concrete interest in the winger last summer.
Arsenal had already had two bids rejected for the midfielder by Monaco before reports of a £70m bid from Liverpool surfaced in early August.
While our final bid was way above the player’s value, I don’t think it’s a crime in the current transfer window to spend more than a player’s value if that’s what it is going to take to sign him ahead of your rivals.
Not to mention that the same Liverpool spent £70m on a centre back just few weeks ago.
