After Petr Čech turned them down, Napoli are returning to Arsenal over a move for another of their goalkeepers, David Ospina, according to reports in Italy.
CalcioMercato report that Napoli are considering a couple of different goalkeepers to sign this summer, after Čech decided against a move. Both had relatively successful campaigns with their countries at the World Cup: Guillermo Ochoa with Mexico and David Ospina with Colombia.
Ospina was reportedly proposed as an option before Napoli signed Alex Meret. After Meret joined, it seemed like the chances of a move for the Colombian were remote, but then the Italian broke his arm. Now, a deal for Ospina could be back on.
The final decision is up to Carlo Ancelotti, as to whether he should use the goalkeepers available and wait for Meret’s recovery, or take precautions by signing a replacement immediately.
Given the goalkeeping situation at Arsenal it probably wouldn’t be a particularly expensive investment. The club have five goalkeepers, and Unai Emery has already confirmed his plans to cut that number down before the new season begins.
In the end it’ll probably come down to whether Ospina is happy to join Napoli. From the sounds of things they only want him to fill a gap for a month or two, which might not sit too well with a goalkeeper who clearly wants regular game time. We’ll see.
