Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen has spoken to the media about reported interest in him from Arsenal and Liverpool.
In recent days, the Spanish media via Sky Sports, claimed Arsenal were one of the clubs who approached the goalkeeper early this month, and want to sign him ahead of next season.
Barcelona, on the other hand, reportedly aren’t interested in selling the former Ajax man for any less than his buyout clause (£52.5m).
Cillessen spoke to Fox Sports about the situation on Tuesday.
“I need to wait patiently. The only thing I know is that Barcelona won’t sell me,” he said.
“Arsenal and Liverpool aren’t bad clubs but if Barcelona say, ‘We love you’, then I’ll accept their decision and continue there.
“I’ll wait until we return on the 16th July to see what they’ve decided. I don’t know anything. If the club wants to keep me, I’ll accept that. I signed a five-year deal with them.”
The 29-year-old goalkeeper only made 11 appearances this season, but played well when given the opportunity.
That was emphasised by the fact he kept eight clean sheets, only conceding three times all year. Of course, you have to give some credit to Barcelona’s solid defending for that too.
Cillessen has now spent two years at Barcelona without coming close to the number one spot though. He’s just turned 29 years old, and if he wants to make the best of the peak of his career he’ll probably need to go somewhere else to do so.
Arsenal could certainly offer a good amount of game time to the Dutchman. They’re badly in need of an upgrade on the 2017/18 season in goal, because mistakes plagued the campaign from start to finish.
Cillessen could provide the solution, but Arsenal need to convince Barcelona to sell first.
