Awkward: Arsenal to sign midfield star despite player out with long term injury

Arsenal, along with Tottenham and Manchester City, are still interested in Norwich’s £25m-rated England u21 international, James Maddison, even though the midfielder is out with knee ligament damage.

Maddison picked up the knee injury this week in the Canaries 5-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday and feared that his chance to secure a move to a Premier League club this summer had been scuppered.

But tests have revealed that the injury is not as bad as first feared. Instead of being out for six months as was initially expected, the 21-year-old should be back in eight-to-ten weeks.

Maddison signed a new four-year contract with Norwich just last June but is said to be keen on moving after they failed to secure promotion this season.

Arsenal have been interested in Maddison since at least the start of 2016 when they were scouting him playing at Coventry.

He has enjoyed an excellent season, scoring 15 and assisting 11 in 49 appearances for Norwich. The right-footed attacking midfielder has scored or assisted almost 50% of his side’s goals this season.

With Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla potentially leaving the club this summer, Arsenal might end up in the market for a creative midfielder, even if that wasn’t originally the plan.

Everton, Southampton and Brighton are also said to be interested in Maddison.
