Former Arsenal winger Emmanuel Petit has urged Arsenal to spend big on players with winning mentality in order to challenge for titles again.
Wenger is preparing to rebuild the squad after Arsenal failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 21 years. He also failed to guide us to a major title in the last 12 years, with three FA Cups our only trophies since 2004.
And while most Gooners have become frustrated, Petit believes there is hope that Arsenal can still challenge for titles – but only if we spend big on top players this transfer window.
“I’m sure Wenger and Arsenal are willing to change things by putting money on the table to bring in players with a winning mentality,” he told Sky Sports News HQ.
“I’m sure some players will come in soon and next season will be totally different for Wenger and Arsenal.
“They are one of the richest clubs in the world. Financially they’ve got no problems so if you don’t put the money on the table then you need the academy to help the first team.
“But with the likes of Walcott, Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ramsey we don’t see many of them in the first team other than Holding.
“That’s not enough, you need a winning mentality and this is something rare in football.”
Petit does have a point, Arsenal are on the verge of losing Alexis Sanchez because of our inability to challenge for major trophies which stems out from our refusal to make quality signings during the transfer window to improve the team.
We have to make changes to our transfer policies and spend big on players that can improve our team if we want to become the heavyweights that we were known as in the past.
The good thing is Wenger has begun to show signs that he is ready to change, with the club being linked with big money moves for Kylian Mbappe, Alexandre Lacazette, Thomas Lemar and James Rodriguez already.
