Draxler has a buy-out clause of £37million that is set to come into play this summer, however the Gunners feel they can lure him in this January with the incentive of playing around a number of his compatriots ahead of this summers World Cup and a realistic shot at the Premier League title.
Wenger is hoping to reinforce his squad prior to the window closing on Friday night. “I hope we have something to tell you because we lost a few players now,” Wenger told the media after their 2-2 draw with Southampton on Tuesday evening.
Draxler to solve Arsenal’s striking dilemma?
When Wenger was quizzed after the Coventry win on Friday last week, The Frenchman responded defensively: “Don’t you think I’ve got enough midfielders already?” However Arsenal’s midfield appears significantly depleted at present, especially with the news of Aaron Ramsey’s injury relapse, meaning he will out for at least another month.
Arsene was then asked whether Draxler is a striking target in the long term. “We don’t rule anything out.” Finally we have some clarity that he is indeed eyeing the German international as a potential centre forward option. Suddenly he becomes a much more desirable transfer acquisition for January.
Draxler set for a medical?
According to journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft, Draxler is undergoing a medical examination with the same doc that gave Mesut Ozil a last minute check-up in Germany prior to his record signing move in the summer.
“I understand Draxler is in Munich today to see Dr. Müller-Wohlfahrt. He will tell Draxler if he can start training with ball again” he tweeted.
Could this medical not only be to check his injury status for Schalke or be a potential initial test for the Gunners to see the severity of his current injury?
This is set to be a very tense next couple of days for the Gunners.
